A sump pump sits in an open pit and moves only groundwater that has seeped in around the foundation. It is not built to pass solids, and waste sent through one would clog or fail it quickly, which is why a below-grade bathroom or laundry needs a separate, purpose-built pump of its own.

An ejector pump sits inside a sealed basin set into the floor, usually serving a bathroom or laundry room built below the main drain line the rest of the building empties into. Waste from those fixtures flows into the basin first, and the pump lifts it up and over to the point where it can join the main line and continue on under gravity from there, the way the rest of the building's plumbing does.
The basin's lid and its seal do as much work as the pump itself. A sealed, vented basin keeps sewer gas contained and keeps waste out of the room around it until the pump moves it along; a lid that no longer seals, or a vent that has failed, can let odor and gas into the building even while the pump underneath is still running. Because the basin holds waste rather than groundwater, a failure here is treated as a contamination concern, not just a mechanical one.

A failed ejector pump or a leaking basin seal can put raw sewage into the surrounding space. This limits exposure until it is repaired.
