01Sump pumps
A sump pump usually shows a problem before it fails outright. What is happening in the pit points to what is wrong with it.
A pump that failed, a float that stuck, or a pit that simply cannot keep up. Each has a different fix, and none of them is waiting for the next storm.
A float switch stuck in the down position, a lost connection to power, or a motor that has seized after sitting untouched for months. None of it shows up until water is already rising in the pit.
A stuck switch, a failed check valve, or a pump that is undersized for the water it is getting.
A float switch mounted too close to the pump, a check valve letting water fall back into the pit, or a pump working harder than the pit's inflow calls for. Short cycling wears out a motor far faster than steady, even running.
A grinding, rattling or straining sound usually means a worn motor, a jammed impeller, or debris in the pit the pump is trying to move along with the water. It is rarely a sound that goes away on its own.
Storms that bring the water often take the power. A battery backup keeps the pit pumping through an outage.
02Urgency
A pit that is slowly filling gives warning. Water already in the basement does not.
None of this gets the pump running again. It keeps people safe until it is looked at.
Standing water in a basement can be carrying an electrical current from anything plugged in nearby, so keeping clear of it is safer than checking by hand. Move children and pets away from the area until the water and the electrical risk are both dealt with.
Water and electricity in the same space is dangerous, and a flooded basement can put outlets, cords and a plugged-in pump underwater at once. If the panel can be reached without stepping through standing water, shutting off power to the affected area removes that risk; if it can't be reached safely, that decision is better left to someone qualified to make it.
Boxes, furniture and anything stored directly on a basement floor are the easiest damage to prevent, and moving what can still be reached to higher ground limits how much a flooded pit turns into a bigger loss. Electronics and anything already sitting in water are best left alone until the water and the power are both confirmed safe.

03Pump types
Both do the same job in the same pit. Where the motor sits changes how they run and how they're serviced.
The motor sits on a column above the pit, staying dry no matter how high the water in the pit rises. That keeps it easier to reach and service, and it tends to last longer for that reason, though it sits up above the pit lid where it is more visible and can be noisier since nothing muffles the motor.
The motor sits down in the pit itself, sealed inside a watertight housing built to run underwater. That keeps it out of sight and generally quieter, and it tends to handle more water, though the motor is working in the one environment that is hardest on it and is less convenient to reach for service since the pit has to be opened first.
04Why it happens
A sump pump sits idle for most of its life, waiting for the one moment it actually has to work. The float switch is usually where that moment goes wrong: it is the only part that moves every cycle, and it can stick against the pit wall, tangle in its own cord, or jam against sediment that has settled on the bottom of the pit over months of quiet running. A pit that has never been cleaned out builds up exactly that kind of debris, one storm at a time, until the float can no longer travel freely.
The storm that floods a basement is often the same storm that cuts the power, and a pump with no way to run without it has a predictable failure mode: it works perfectly until the one time the power goes out too. A battery backup pump keeps running through that outage, drawing on a battery kept charged for exactly that moment, which is the difference between a pump that protects a basement and one that only protects it when the weather cooperates.
05Cost
No two pits need the same pump. These change what the job actually involves.
A pit that has silted up over years of quiet running gives a float switch less room to move and a pump less clearance to draw water cleanly. A pit that is cleaned out and in good shape is a smaller job than one that has to be dug out or lined before a new pump goes in.
How much water the pit actually collects, and how fast it arrives during heavy rain, decides how much pump is enough. An undersized pump runs constantly and wears out fast; an oversized one short-cycles and wastes the pump's working life in bursts far shorter than it was built for.
How far the water has to travel to get clear of the foundation, whether the line has to be buried, and whether it needs protection from freezing in a cold climate all add to the work. A discharge line that already routes water somewhere useless is often as much of the job as the pump itself.
A battery backup pump, or another way to keep a pump running without household power, is a separate addition to a basic installation. Deciding whether the property needs one is really a question about how much a lost pump during an outage would cost, not just what the equipment itself costs.
06Questions
Before the wet season and after any long dry spell. Pour water into the pit until the float lifts and confirm the pump runs and the water leaves. A pump that has sat idle for months is the one that fails.
The float switch is the only moving mechanical part that has to work every single time, after sitting untouched for weeks or months between storms. It can stick against the side of the pit, get tangled in its own cord, jam against debris that has settled in the pit, or wear out from the constant up-and-down motion. A pump with a perfectly good motor does nothing at all if the switch never tells it to turn on.
A pedestal pump keeps its motor mounted above the pit, out of the water, with only the intake down in the pit itself. A submersible pump sits down in the pit with the motor sealed inside a watertight housing, running the whole time it is under water. Submersible pumps tend to run quieter and handle more water; pedestal pumps are easier to service because the motor is never wet.
The discharge line carries water from the pit, up through the pipe, and out away from the foundation to a point where it can drain without running back toward the house. A line that ends too close to the foundation can send the same water right back into the pit or the basement. In cold climates, a discharge line that is not sloped or protected can freeze solid, and a frozen line stops the pump from moving any water at all, no matter how well the pump itself is working.
A standard sump pump runs on household power, so it stops the moment the power does, which is often the same storm that is putting the most water into the pit. A battery backup pump keeps running through an outage, drawing from a battery kept charged for exactly that moment. Without one, a basement's protection depends entirely on the power staying on through the worst weather it will ever see.
Water that cannot be stopped, sewage coming up, no water at all, or a smell of gas: urgent. A drip, a slow drain or a running toilet: worth fixing soon, but not tonight. When in doubt, shut off the water to the fixture and ask.
