01Hard water signs
Each of these points back to hardness, and a softener is the equipment built to treat it directly.
Hardness minerals bind with soap before it can lather, leaving a film on skin, hair, glass and fixtures that rinsing never fully clears. A softener removes the minerals causing it rather than treating the film itself.
White or chalky mineral scale collects wherever water sits or evaporates, narrowing aerators and shower heads and coating the inside of pipes and the water heater over time. It is the visible sign of the hardness a softener is built to address.
Scale collects inside a water heater tank and on heating elements, reducing efficiency and shortening the life of anything hardness passes through, including dishwashers and washing machines. Softening the water going in slows that buildup.
02Choosing the media
Both soften the same way; what differs is cost, upkeep and what ends up in the softened water.
Sodium chloride pellets are the standard choice for the brine tank: widely available, straightforward to regenerate with, and the least expensive option to keep stocked. Regeneration sends a small amount of sodium into the softened water along with the displaced hardness minerals.
Potassium chloride softens the same way but leaves out the added sodium, which matters for anyone managing sodium intake. It generally costs more per bag and needs restocking more often, and not every softener is set up to run on it without adjustment.

03How it works
Inside the tank, resin beads hold a charge that attracts calcium and magnesium — the minerals that make water hard — and releases sodium or potassium ions in their place as water passes through. Once the resin has taken on as much hardness as it can hold, it needs to be flushed clean before it can keep working.
That flush is regeneration: a brine solution washes the resin, displaces the hardness minerals it has collected, and carries all of it out through a drain line, after which the resin is ready to exchange ions again. None of this removes chlorine, sediment or anything dissolved that softening was never built to address, so treating hardness and treating drinking water quality stay separate jobs.
04Sizing it right
A larger household or more bathrooms means more daily water use passing through the resin bed, which is the main number sizing starts from. Two properties with the same size tank can need very different regeneration schedules once actual use is accounted for.
Hardness is measured in grains per gallon, and a higher reading means the resin reaches its capacity faster and regenerates more often for the same amount of water used. A water test is what turns sizing from a guess into a number.
Regeneration needs a drain connection close to the softener to carry away the brine and rinse water each cycle. Where the install site is far from any drain, running a new line adds a step the rest of the job does not need.
05Questions
Both regenerate the same way. Salt, as sodium chloride, is the common and less expensive choice. Potassium chloride softens without adding sodium to the water, which some households prefer, though it typically costs more and needs replacing more often.
Sizing weighs how many people and fixtures the property serves, its typical daily water use, and how hard the incoming water tests. Undersized equipment runs out of capacity between regenerations; oversized equipment uses more salt and water than the property needs.
The resin bed that has been collecting hardness minerals is flushed with a brine solution, which displaces those minerals and carries them, along with a volume of water, out through a drain line. The resin is then ready to soften again.
Where the problem is, when it started, what changed, whether the water is off, and the age of the fixture or heater involved. A photo of the problem and of any visible model label helps too.
