Signs it may be time
- Repeated pinhole leaks, especially in different locations
- Galvanized steel pipe with low pressure and rusty or discolored water
- Polybutylene pipe, a gray plastic known for failing at fittings
- Visible corrosion, green or white crust at copper joints
- A remodel that already opens most of the walls
Repair or repipe
One leak in sound pipe is a repair. When the pipe material is failing throughout, each repair fixes one spot while the next leak forms somewhere else, and the water damage from each one adds up.
What the work involves
New supply lines are run through walls and ceilings, usually with small openings rather than whole walls removed, and the old lines are disconnected. Most homes have water back each evening while the work is underway.
