Short, severe freezes leave exposed piping vulnerable
Freezing weather in Weir tends to arrive in spells rather than remain constant all winter. That makes an exposed pipe easy to overlook until a hard cold event freezes the water inside it. Lines running through unconditioned garages, attics, crawl areas, exterior walls, and outdoor connections lose the protection that heated indoor space provides.
The immediate problem is often an ice blockage that stops water from reaching a faucet or fixture. The larger concern comes from water expanding as it freezes. That expansion puts force on pipe and fittings, and a split may not show itself until the ice melts and water begins moving again.
We thaw the affected line without using open-flame heat, then check the full run once flow returns. A pipe that appears to be working again still needs to be examined for damage that was hidden while it was frozen. Protecting exposed sections with insulation, disconnecting and draining hoses, covering outdoor connections, and keeping enough heat inside during forecast freezes all reduce the chance of another frozen line.
