What maintenance includes
- Flushing sediment from the bottom of the tank
- Testing the temperature and pressure relief valve
- Inspecting the anode rod, which protects the tank from corrosion
- Checking venting, gas connections or electrical components
- Looking for leaks, rust and water around the base
Tankless heaters
Tankless units are descaled by circulating a cleaning solution through the heat exchanger. The inlet screen should be cleaned as well. How often depends mostly on water hardness.
Why it pays off
Sediment and a spent anode rod are the two most common reasons a tank fails early. Regular maintenance keeps the heater efficient and extends its life.
Doing it yourself
Flushing is within reach for many homeowners, but the water is hot and old drain valves can fail to close. Turn off the gas or power first and let the water cool, or have it done as part of a service visit.
